Heel spurs represent one of the most common sources of heel pain. The condition originates from inflammation at muscle tendon attachment points, typically characterized by enthesitis—inflammation of the periosteum where tendons attach to bone. Over time, this inflammation can lead to ossification, or bone formation, at the attachment site. The advanced stage resembles a rider's spur on X-ray images, which explains the medical terminology "heel spur" or "Calcar calcanei."
When heel spurs cause pain, patients often develop abnormal walking patterns such as limping. This compensatory movement disrupts normal muscle coordination, placing non-physiological stress on weight-bearing joints and the spine. The resulting pain and degenerative changes can extend beyond the feet, exemplifying the saying "flat feet can cause headaches."
